St. Peter's Church Donat
St. Peter's Church Donat
The Church of St. Donatus in Zadar has long been out of sacral function, and from the end of the 19th century to 1954 it housed the Archaeological Museum of Zadar. Since St. Donat has exceptional acoustic characteristics, it has been home to music Renaissance festivals for decades.
The monumental medieval monument was built in the 9th century, modelled on early Romei (Byzantine) architecture. First it bore the name of the Holy Trinity, and then the name of bishop Donatus who had it built. It is used for music programs. The most famous is the monument of Zadar, to which numerous songs are dedicated.
St. Peter's Church Donata (originally the Holy Trinity) is the most valuable monument of the pre-Romanesque architecture of the early Middle Ages (9th century) in Croatia and a symbol of the city of Zadar, and because of its distinctive shape one of the most important of its kind in Europe. According to the type of construction, it follows the shapes of the court churches of the circular floor plan from the early Byzantine to the Carolingian period. Nevertheless, for its rough monumentality (height 27 meters and width 22 meters), unusual cylindrical shape and double interior space stands out for its originality, without some direct role models.
According to tradition, it was built by the Bishop of St. Peter of Zadar. Donat in the 9th century, and mentioned in the 10th century in his famous work "On the Governance of the State" by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porfirogenet. It was originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and the name of St. Donatus began to be called only from the 15th century.
