Barkajoli
One of the symbols of the city of Zadar are barcajoli (lat. barcatores), which since the 14th century have been connecting the two shores of the city port by small rowboats in all weathers – from Điga, the breakwater with the lighthouse, to the Peninsula and thus for generations of Zadran have shortened the way to work or the city center. Many passengers use the services of barnacles and later their sons for their entire working lives.
Since the 14th century, Zadar has cultivated a tradition of barkajol – citizens who were given the right by the Zadar commune in the Middle Ages to transport people or cargo in the city port for a certain fee. From early morning to late evening with a boat connecting the mainland and the Peninsula in Zadar, barracks transport passengers and tourists, nurturing a tradition that, according to some audacious explorers, goes back almost 3,000 years.
